Revision of India’s water policy towards Pakistan
Taking advantage of the deteriorating political, economic and security situation in Pakistan, India has called for a revision of the Indus Watershed Treaty1 .
In fact, it intends to pursue its hydroelectric projects in Kashmir on the Indus and its tributaries the Chenab and Jhelum (see map), regardless of Pakistani opposition. The central government now fully involves the government of the part of Kashmir it administers, in the hope of satisfying the predominantly Muslim Kashmiris and reducing the impact of Pakistani opposition. A recent meeting between the central authorities in New Delhi and the provincial authorities in Srinagar confirmed this. [•••]
