Since his election in May 2018, Mahathir, the new Malaysian prime minister, has regularly criticized and targeted Chinese projects. While he had already questioned and frozen a number of major Chinese projects in Malaysia, including railways, signed by his predecessor, and had traveled to Japan for his first official visit, his latest statements on the Forest City project increase even more the pressure on Chinese projects.
