Elle marquait pourtant l’échéance fixée au Royaume-Uni par les Nations unies pour la rétrocession de l’archipel des Chagos à la république de Maurice. Le sort de la base aéronavale américaine hébergée sur l’atoll de Diego Garcia restera donc en balance entre fait accompli ou crise en puissance.

Dans l’océan Indien, l’archipel des Chagos s’est trouvé exclu de la décolonisation entreprise par le Royaume-Uni en 1967. Des trois îles habitées sur la cinquantaine que compte cet archipel, seul l’atoll de Diego Garcia est occupé aujourd’hui. Porteur d’une base aéronavale de la Royal Navy cédée aux États-Unis, l’île est passée, le 25 février 2019, de la souveraineté britannique à celle de la République de Maurice. La clarification de son statut jusque-là incertain, modifiera-t-il l’équilibre stratégique de l’océan Indien ?
In the Indian Ocean, the Chagos archipelago was excluded from the decolonization undertaken by the United Kingdom in 1967. Of the three inhabited islands in the fifties that account this archipelago, only the atoll of Diego Garcia is busy today. Bearer of a naval air station of the Royal Navy yielded to the United States, the island passed, on February 25, 2019, of the British sovereignty to that of the Republic of Mauritius. Will the clarification of its hitherto uncertain status change the strategic balance of the Indian Ocean?
毛里求斯乃是印度洋中的島國，1968年獨立時，英國卻將具有戰略價值的查戈斯群島扣住不還，並早在1966年，與美國達成軍事協議，要把其中最主要的珊瑚礁一一迪戈加西亞，打造成海空軍基地。2019年2月25日，國際法庭裁定，英國應將其在殖民時代，非法侵佔的查戈斯群島還給毛里求斯。此種情勢的演變，難道會改變印度洋的戰略平衡嗎？
